Being Hohl
When Your Health Journey Becomes Your Life's Mission
Have you ever felt that your health journey was just patching symptoms rather than truly healing? That's exactly where I found myself before taking an unexpected hiatus from this podcast to transform my approach to wellness—and my entire life.
After spending over $10,000 on functional medicine treatments that only temporarily masked my symptoms, I discovered a profound truth: our bodies are designed to heal themselves when given the right environment. That realization sparked a complete reinvention of my path. Rather than continuing as a frustrated patient following restrictive diets and expensive supplement regimens, I earned my doctorate in functional medicine and opened Being Whole—a 6,000 square foot wellness center that combines root-cause testing with powerful healing modalities.
What makes this story even more remarkable is how the vision came to me during a meditation session years ago. I received a complete "download" of what would become Being Hohl—the name, the building with its many rooms, each housing different wellness modalities. At the time, I was a real estate agent with no formal training in wellness, yet the universe had already mapped out my future. Today, that vision has manifested exactly as foreseen, with our center helping clients reset their bodies through red light therapy, PEMF, hyperbaric oxygen, lymphatic massage, and personalized protocols based on comprehensive testing.
My guiding philosophy is simple but transformative: "Test, don't guess." Through simple diagnostic tests like saliva analysis, we identify what's truly happening in your body rather than making educated guesses. We then create custom protocols that blend with our various therapeutic modalities to provide what I call a "factory reset" for your body. Whether you're struggling with mental health challenges, chronic fatigue, or unexplained symptoms, we're here to look at the whole person—not just isolated issues. Hey friends, welcome back to the Being Hohl podcast. I am your host, Dani Hohl, and it has been a minute since I've been behind the mic. So much has shifted, both personally and professionally, for me. So I thought that my first episode back needed to be a bit of a life update. Back needed to be a bit of a life update. So if you've been wondering what's happening, why I stepped away for a little while and where things are headed now, this is an episode for you.
Speaker 1:If you know me in real life, you might have an idea of where I've been and what I've been up to. But for those of you that don't just wanted to share, so I'll be honest when I last recorded, I truly did not expect to take this much time away, but life has a way of throwing some curveballs and growth opportunities at the same time. During my pause, I've been working on myself, furthering my education and really reimagining how I want to show up in this space, not just for myself, but for all of you that spend your time listening to me. Right, you could be choosing to do anything, so when you choose to listen to me, I'm super grateful for that and I want to make sure I'm showing up in the most beautiful way for you guys as well. Um, and if you don't know, earlier this year, my husband and I opened up a wellness space in Ohio Stow, Ohio, um, and that has been one of the most beautiful things that I have done. We had a couple setbacks with that. However, those setbacks that we experienced was actually the catalyst that I needed to push myself into something that I've truly been dreaming up for years. So we own a wellness Being Hohl called spelled same as the podcast, and that space represents a lot of things, but it represents authenticity, alignment and truly becoming the most whole version of yourself. Pun intended, I know Couldn't have picked a better man to marry. That business literally carries my last name, right, Because it is so personal to us both. This isn't just a business that I run. It truly is the work that I live and breathe. So if you don't know me in real life, let's talk a little bit about what being Whole is. It is a holistic health and wellness space that blends functional medicine with powerful in-house modalities like red light therapy, pemf, full spectrum sauna, lymphatic massage, hyperbaric oxygen chamber. It's really all about getting to the root of health challenges that people have, and not just putting a band-aid on symptoms. Why this matters so deeply to me is because of my own journey.
Speaker 1:So I first found functional medicine. Honestly, it hasn't been that long, it's probably been about a year and I did what so many people do, right I loaded up on supplements. I was following super strict diet rules. I threw myself into every wellness tool I could find and at one point, like I didn't know right, so I trusted the people that I had hired. At one point, I was sitting underneath of a red light bulb, fully clothed. Now I know that red light cannot go through clothing and I was paying a lot of money at this establishment to receive the services that I received. I probably spent well over $10,000 on myself and my family on services, trying to solve my issues and I've shared in several other episodes, but, like my journey to here is rippled with mental health all throughout, so I really wanted to find the root cause of my mental health. Um, and after spending a lot of money and working with them for about six months, I actually ended up finding myself to this day, or kind of right back where I was, because not all functional medicine is geared to truly get to the root of your symptoms. Did that company read my blood work? Yes, did they make recommendations on what I should be doing? Yes, but clearly they did not get to the root, because as soon as I stopped taking those supplements, all my symptoms came right back.
Speaker 1:Part of that plan was also that I was on a super restrictive diet and I have an all or nothing personality. I think a lot of that stems from my ADHD, like if I'm super passionate about something and super into it, I give it my all. If I could care less about it, then I could literally care less. But I truly was on a mission to heal my body so that I could show up as the best version of myself for everyone, especially my husband and my kids. But that super restrictive diet left me with a somewhat unhealthy relationship with food. I became obsessed over ingredients and portions and I wouldn't even allow myself to cheat a little bit right Like before long. I had noticed that my anxiety was actually getting worse and when I sat with that anxiety and kind of did some self-reflection on it to see where it was coming from, it was very much triggered by food or meal planning or feeling like I was missing out on things because our friends were doing something or you know, if they were having a cookout, like, well, what will I eat? I'm sure that not everybody is making organic, grass-fed beef and all these different things and it truly started to kind of take over my brain.
Speaker 1:Um, in addition to the super restrictive diet, I was taking tons of supplements every day and, like I said, like at the time I absolutely felt better, right, and the supplements did show that I needed them in my blood work. Like, did I need fish oil Omegas? Yes, right. Did I start that journey with high iron and needed to work on that? Yes, right. So it's not like they did things for me that I did not need. They just didn't go back far enough. They didn't dig deep enough to get to the root of what was truly happening. Um, and I think, stopping those supplements after six months because they were hella expensive.
Speaker 1:So stopping those after the functional medicine and finding that very quickly my symptoms started coming back and, mind you, I am grateful that I have the ability to prioritize eating organic and eating healthy, and I'm very aware of how much sugar I put in my body and dairy, and you know I try to follow the 80-20 principle 80% of the time I'm making really healthy decisions, 20% of the time I'm allowing myself to live my life. So the fact that my symptoms came back so quickly was a wake up call. Right, like I truly wasn't healing my body. I was just patching myself together and I knew there had to be a better way. Right Like your body is designed to heal itself when it's put in the environment to do so, and I clearly wasn't putting my body in the right environment to do so. And I clearly wasn't putting my body in the right environment to do so.
Speaker 1:So that experience pushed me deeper. One thing about me is, if I cannot find someone to do it in a way that I perceive is the correct way, I'll just do it my damn self. And that's literally what I did. I decided to study root cause medicine. I earned my doctorate in functional medicine and I get to build a model of care that looks at the whole person and not just some isolated symptoms. And in order to do that, I've partnered with the most fantastic program that is designed by a team of functional doctors with decades in the industry, and it's backed by hundreds of doctors who are using this exact program in their clinics every day. And we're all passionate about one thing Tests. Don't guess. Passionate about one thing test, don't guess.
Speaker 1:I will be digging into the functional medicine stuff and the specific program in another episode, but I just wanted to like drop a little Easter egg in there, not even an Easter egg. Taylor Swift's much better at Easter eggs than I am, I think. But I just wanted to like let you know that that's what I had going on and I'm super, super excited. The stuff that I've learned, how easy it truly is to reset your body I digress, okay. So Being Hohl is a space that I get to bring all of that together the functional medicine, the hands-on therapies, the personal experience of having been through trial and error. And my vision for this place is it's not just a place that you come when you feel unwell, but it truly is meant to be a community where you can align your health mind, body and soul with the life that you're meant to live. And I have to tell you like this space came to me in a meditation, like four or five years ago somewhere around there.
Speaker 1:Um, if you have never done meditation or breath work, this may sound a little crazy to you. Hopefully, maybe this will encourage you to try it, because meditation has truly changed my life. If you do meditate or have done breath work, this might not surprise you at all, but I was attending a group breath work session a couple years ago and this massive download came into my brain Again. If you've never meditated, you don't necessarily know what that means, but it is just this feeling of information and knowing that just gets like dropped into your brain. And you know that it's not you, because if it was you, you would have had these thoughts before. It absolutely is a download from whatever you believe in. Right, I like to use the word universe, that's just my personal preference, but if you've experienced that, you know how powerful those downloads can be.
Speaker 1:While meditating that day and doing that breath work, I saw myself standing in front of this huge commercial building surrounded by tons of rooms, and the name on the outside of the building was being whole Saw it. I kept like quote unquote hearing right, that each of these rooms is supposed to have a different type of wellness modality, and at the time I didn't understand what that meant because I was literally a real estate agent. I was not doing anything in the wellness industry. I was working on healing my own body, so I thought that that meant I was going to use my money in real estate, purchase a commercial building and rent it out to all of these different people that were in the wellness industry so that when people showed up they had access to all of these different modalities. Now I see what the universe actually meant, because that is exactly what I've built. I have a 6,000 square foot commercial space the name on the outside is being Whole. There's 20 rooms, I think, in there, and each one is the home of just beautiful wellness modalities.
Speaker 1:Opening that in March gave us an opportunity to experience what that was like and it was great. People are already seeing results, especially in their mental health, in their physical bodies, the strength that they have the calmness, their physical bodies, the strength that they have the calmness, the central nervous system reset. I just kept feeling like something was missing and I tried to find functional medicine doctors. All of them were essentially charging an arm and a leg because you can. You know, your most functional medicine is cash, pay, self pay, and I wanted to find someone that truly put the care of the client before the lining of the pocketbook and also followed the model of what we are and, like I said before, if I can't find it, I'll just do it myself. And that's what I did. So I got my doctorate from Rockwell School of Holistic Medicine and I am Dr Dani Hohl DFM, doctor of Functional Medicine.
Speaker 1:So now I got to create this blend where I can test people to determine what is truly happening in their body, and it is a. The one I typically start with is just a very simple spit test, but once we get those results back, I can build custom protocols based on what is happening in their body. And the beautiful thing is I can merge that with the red light, the pump, the hyperbaric sauna, detoxing lymphatic drainage, like all of that comes together in this beautiful blend of finding the root cause, providing it with the necessary tools to improve it. Hopefully it stays in an environment where that can continue on and you're just using the wellness modalities to continue providing an environment for your body to thrive and succeed. So my version of functional medicine is intentional, it is test-based, it is systemic, it is basically a factory reset for your body and again, we'll be digging into that in more episodes.
Speaker 1:But, as you can tell, I'm super excited about it and I want this podcast to be a part of it, a space where we can share education and success stories and tools that can support you on your own journey to feeling whole. So that's where I've been. Nothing major right, that's where I've been. That's where we're going. It feels so good to be back behind the mic. I'm excited to keep showing up here consistently.
